TOXAWAY FALLS

Toxaway Falls is located on the south end of Lake Toxaway and is visible from the highway as you pass over the top of the falls. One interesting point about this falls is that in 1916 the dam at the top of the falls gave way and the water gushing down the gorge stripped away the trees and plant life and exposed the bedrock along the falls and below. A second point of interest is that the west side of the falls has been developed by builders who built condos right at the edge of the falls. I assume that around the time this development began, the falls was included as part of the Gorges State Park which protects the east side of the falls from development. Many of the local residents and visitors consider these condos to be an eye-sore.
